I know it refers to my Grandma in the title but I love both of my Grandparents dearly. Heck, until I was 13 my Grandpa was my best friend, my whole world really.
My Grandma and I have always had this thing with mailing each other things. Even though at one point I lived closer to her than the post office, we have always used the USPS as a fun little surprise for each other. The things I get in the mail from Grandma vary; sometimes it is a newspaper article, or a church flyer, sometimes a silly picture, one time I even got an empty envelope (oops). It is just a way of her letting me know that I was thought about. The funny thing is that I see my Grandparents often. There is just something special about seeing something and throwing it in an envelope. These surprises happen at random and are always the highlight of my day. I love “snail mail”! I think in such a fast paced world we should have one thing slow that brings us pleasure. Mine is mail. I think the sight of my name handwritten on an envelope or package is one of the best things ever. And what’s inside?!?! Open it! Open it! I love cards, letters on stationary, invitations, you name it and if it got to me through the mailbox then I am like a kid at Christmas. I even appreciate my mailman as the bringer of good things.
Today I got a card sized envelope in that so familiar handwriting. In it were clippings from a Southern Living magazine. One page had how to make sheep out of marshmallows and Milano cookies for Easter decorations, which I promptly mailed to my sister (they are her favorite cookies). There was an ad from, I assume, the back for a company that makes quilts out of your old t-shirts. A recipe for Oregano Green Beans and one for Oven Fried Pork Chops. An article about foot care from “an expert” (are you trying to tell me something Granny?). And last but not least an article written by Valerie Fraser Luesse entitled Our Sunday Best. In this article she goes into “three blasts from the past that deserve a comeback”. The first is The Easter Dress. I really don’t think people even know what the term “church clothes” means. The last time I went to church people were wearing their BBQ best, flip-flops and all. The second is the Mother’s Day corsage, which is why (I think) Grandma sent this to me. And third is the Hostess Apron. Yep, I said hostess apron. You know something to protect your nice clothes while cooking that fancy dinner. Think June Cleaver, pearls are optional. Used for wiping hands, children’s faces, and as a stand in potholder. These babies need to make a comeback! Check out this site for some super cute vintage aprons: www.jessiesteele.com . All three of these things have long since lost their importance in today’s fashion and I fully agree with you Ms. Luesse. Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed this article.
I will apologize that I cannot do this article justice in describing it. I urge all of you to look it up and read. It is in the April 2010 issue of Southern Living, page 160. Check it out online, head to your local library or... if you would like I will mail you a copy. ;)
