Happy Mother’s Day

  • May. 10th, 2010 at 12:15 AM

First I would like to say thank you to all of the Moms out there who have the same station in life that I have chosen. Whether you are a mother of one or many, by birth or adoption, a mother-to-be, single or attached, or simply choose to mother our four legged friends. It is a thankless job that only someone who has been here could ever truly appreciate.

Having expressed my thanks I would like to share my family’s version of a Mother’s Day tradition- Laundry. For generations, when asked what our special day’s activities were, my family always replies by saying “ah, just doin’ some laundry”. We may get a handful of cards with heartfelt sentiment, a bouquet of flowers, or a nice meal but in the end this Hallmark Holiday is just another day in the life of a woman with children. I am the oldest of three girls (all of whom have kids), my Mom is an only child, and before her my Grandma is the only girl in her family. So on this day, as a running joke, we always do what we would do on any other day which is our laundry. My house does not stop because a card company wanted to suck an extra $3.85 out of me. I love being a mother and I know all of the women in my family feel the same way but this ride demands we keep up. I have started a small “other” tradition of having a breakfast for my family, and it is something I think we all enjoy. The rest of the day sometimes includes a movie, dinner out, time spent with my husband’s family, or other fun “in honor of Mom” activities. Today was a good one. Breakfast, then naps, then off to my sister-in-law’s for an awesome dinner but it did not go off without having done three loads in between the fun.

So big hugs to all of my fellow snot catching, butt wiping, carpooling, life lesson teaching fixers of scraped knees and broken hearts who wipe tears, referee life, and assist with homework, makeup, driving/tuba/swimming lessons. Much love to the biggest fans in the stands, the arms when you need them, the hair washing, sock sorting, hand holding wonder women that make a rock into a nest and a house a home. I know you are out there and Mom- you are the best!

Now off to fold before I hit the sac!
