My little guy and I have been having a pretty rough time getting along lately. He has been sassy, rude, violent with his brother, throwing tantrums at me, mean to our new puppy, and pretty much all things awful that come with being three. I deep breathe through most of my days lately and patiently wait for this “phase” to pass. Life is hard and he has a hard time with the idea of being the littlest in a house of big. Since the arrival of our newest family member (the dog) he has been showing classic “middle child” signs. I get it and have tried to be on his little hostile side.
His big brother is in preschool three half days a week and as a testament of my devotion I usually let him decide what cool thing we do, just the two of us. The usual faves are things like play at a friend’s house, shopping, walk in the park, home for a snuggle and back to bed for a bit, or a visit with Granny and Grandpa. Today he was a perfect angel (surprise!) during my boring errands so I told him we could do anything he wanted. He said “lets go to the boat!” “what boat?” I ask, not sure of his meaning. We live by a river and this could have meant any of a dozen things. He replies with a triumphant “the casino!”. The casino is near our home and most of the places we had to run errands today. It is nicknamed The Boat because of some dumb rule when it was built that it had to be on the river instead of on land.
My little buddy is no stranger to blurting out odd phrases like “dinosaur nipples” during a teeth brushing, or the contribution “we don’t lick frogs” in the middle of his brother’s explanation about the lesson in his class that week. Besides, we only ever take the kids to the casino because it has this killer buffet that we like to gather with friends at. So, when I asked him if he was sure that is where he wanted to go, and he replied with a definite “yes”, off we went.
We galloped (like horseys) hand in hand into the casino at 9:30 this morning, yep- Mother of the Year here folks. Though I did feel a little like I was missing something, my AARP card and a Social Security check? We plopped ourselves right on the coolest fountain (this side of the Bellagio) and enjoyed each other’s company for a good 40min. I asked him how many pennies he wanted to make wishes with and got the sweetly unexpected “just one”. It was fun. We had fun. I have been kicking myself in the ass ever since because I, without my camera, had a dead battery on my phone and will forever be forced to use my lame brain to remember his perfect little joy. *sniff* Thanks for a perfect morning Stinky. xoxo
